Chamber filter press is the most common type of filter presses, which are used chamber filter plates. Filtering occurs in the space formed between two adjacent plates. The volume of the filter depends on the depth of the chambers. Chamber filter plate is generally made from high-strength polypropylene and have high performance. Chamber filter presses are used in cases if the process requires only mechanical separation of the slurry and does not need the low moisture content of the sludge. An example is the filtering of sewage sludge, electroplatings wastes after neutralization, and ceramic slip.

The solid and heavy-duty steel filter press frame, which consists of the following main components, forms the basis: Feeding stands with filtrate outlet (headpiece), hydraulic stands with locking cylinder (pressure piece), crossbeam, and side rails on which the individual filter plates are arranged accordingly including filter cloths. The plate pack also consists of uniform chamber plates with a 15-50 mm cut-out for holding the puncture-proof filter cake. Polypropylene (PP) is used as the chamber plate material in the standard version.

How does a filter press work?

At the beginning of the filtration cycle, the press and the filter plates are closed by a (hydraulic) locking cylinder. The closing cylinder presses the filter plates against each other via the pressure plate and increases the hydraulic pressure accordingly to the required nominal closing pressure. Due to the design, a chamber is formed between the individual filter plates, which represents the process chamber. The suspension to be filtered is pumped into the chambers with a suitable feed pump through the turbidity inlet at the feed stand and concentrated there. Depending on the respective application, the filter plates are lined with special filter cloths, which visibly retain the solids during the flow, considering the process characteristics.

Types of Chamber Filter Press

Chamber filter press is also called chamber plate filter press, There are several types of chamber filter presses in existence, defined according to various parameters. Examples include the type and number of filter plates, chamber volume, filter surface area, filling pump pressure and volume, hydraulic cylinder pressure and size.

1. Side-plate recessed chamber filter press

Discharge Of The Filtrate / Emptying Of The Chambers

The filtered and clear liquid (filtrate) is discharged along with a channel system (open filtrate outlet) into the laterally mounted filtrate channel. A closed filtrate outlet is also available as an option. On the other hand, the solid material remains in the plating chamber as a solid filter cake. The increasing feed pressure compresses and dewaters the resulting filter cake in the chamber. The pressure has increased significantly once the throughput has fallen to a predetermined minimum. The individual chambers inside the filter plates are filled with the filter cake, and the filtration process is complete. To empty the chambers, the closing pressure of the filter press is released, the filter press is opened, and the cake is removed from the filter cloths. The filtration cycle is then repeated.
